The month of February is known for many things. One of the most common is Valentine’s Day, which has been taken over by commercial interests around the world to sell more chocolates, stuffed toys, greeting cards, jewellery, and to fill restaurants with people pursuing romance. Rather than be turned off by the gross commercialization of the day, I choose to focus on its roots; the expression of love (OK, go on, call me a hopeless romantic).

When thinking about love, one of the pieces of literature which resonates with me is the following reading, which by the way, Elisa and I used at our wedding.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

This resonates with me is because it is expressing love as an action not as an emotion. It is something that can be seen, experienced and demonstrated. This is contrary to the world today which allows personal feelings to dictate – we do what we want when we want because we “feel” like it, and if we don’t “feel” like it, we don’t do it.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that love should be devoid of emotion; rather, we need to show the love as well. So, this month, let’s focus on being patient, kind and free from envy. Let’s practise the above with all our relationships and see where the positive actions take us!

Love on the Mat During February we will be focussing on heart openers, such as reverse plank, upward facing dog, camel pose, wheel, cobra and bridge. Those of you who practise at home should also incorporate same in your routines. Make sure you warm up before dropping right into your heart centre – we don’t want any broken hearts ;).

Another exercise is to create an intention to love one of your traits that you wouldn’t think to immediately self-love. This trait could be physical, mental or emotional. Reaffirm your love throughout your practice.

Elisa and I look forward to seeing you on the mat, showing the love!
